(From the City of Joplin)Joplin’s American Legion Post 13 will be conducting a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 5 PM on Flag Day, Tues, June 14 on the grounds of Memorial Hall, at 8th & Joplin.
The community is invited to participate or bring retired U.S. or State flags for disposal. A brief ceremony will be held at the beginning, then the Legion members will care for all the flags received.
If individuals wish to retire their own family flag, Legion members will be on hand to assist.
Flags can be dropped off in advance in collection barrels located on the 1st Floor of Joplin City Hall, 6th & Main Street from 8 AM to 5 PM Monday, June 13, and Tuesday, June 14.
Since 1916, one day a year has been set to honor Old Glory. Prior to Flag Day the flags we fly at your homes or businesses should be inspected to determine if they need to be replaced. If there are showing age from the weather, tattered from the wind, or are faded from the sunlight, the flag should be replaced.
What happens when a U.S. Flag is retired? The recommended method established in U.S. Code is that the Flag of the United States, when retired, should be deposed of by burning. For some people, burning an American flag is in part sacrilegious. If done improperly or as an act of violence, this is true.
A flag retirement ceremony, as it is more fittingly called is the proper way. According to Bob Harrington, Joplin American Legion Post 13 commander, “Burning is the proper way to dispose of retired flags, but it doesn’t end there. Caring for the ashes and respectfully burying them is part of the process too.”
