Schifferdecker Golf Course celebrates 100th anniversary

Joplin’s Schifferdecker Park has always been a popular gathering place, even 100 years ago. The park had many amenities in its early days, including a public golf course. Joplin’s Golf Course opened on June 29, 1922. 

The golf course’s name was changed to Schifferdecker Golf Course in August 1923 by the City Council in honor of Charles Schifferdecker who willed a 120-acre tract of land upon his death in 1915.

 

To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Schifferdecker Golf Course, City and community leaders have planned an Anniversary event for 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 29 at the golf course. There will be a Ribbon Cutting with celebratory tee shots from Mayor Pro Tem Keenan Cortez, Parks and Recreation Director Paul Bloomberg, and other special guests. 

Historian Brad Belk will provide a historical perspective about the course and the golfers who have played in Joplin. A reception will follow the ceremony.

Also on Wednesday, June 29, free golf, with carts included, is being offered. Only groups of fours, referred to as “foursomes”, are allowed, and a tee time is required for play. 

All golfers must adhere to all golf course rules and etiquette. Tee times will be available from 6:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Joplin Golf Club will be serving food for purchase during the day.

On Saturday, June 25, golfers will participate in the 100th Anniversary Golf Tournament. The tournament is full for both the morning and afternoon shotgun start. Each will have three flights and special hole contests. Organizers look forward to seeing many who have called Schifferdecker their home course through the years playing in this tournament. Joplin Golf Club will be serving food for purchase during the day.
