Locally produced children’s programs honored on Newsmakers

(From KGCS)

Kids, cartoons, cowboys and puppets combined with friendly hosts to create a formula for children’s programming when broadcast television first found its place in four state homes.

Two of those programs were The Fun Club on KOAM-TV and The Bar 12 Ranger on KODE-TV. The history of both will be featured on this week’s Newsmakers.

The Missouri Southern State University Regional Media Hall of Fame recently inducted the children’s programs. Video documentaries tell their history with the help of local fans and television station staff. The Fun Club featured Hollywood cowboy and musician, “Arkansas Slim” Andrews, the 49er, and his puppet mule named Josephine along with host Roger Neer. Children were guests who often celebrated their birthdays on the show while watching cartoons. The Bar 12 Ranger featured Ranger Ed Wilson introducing cartoons as well.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of December 17 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, December 23 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
