Newsmakers program features Joplin Black-owned newspaper, KSNF general manager

(From KGCS)

Service to the community is a theme that connects two recent inductees into The Missouri Southern State University Regional Media Hall of Fame. And this week on Newsmakers, video documentaries recognize the honorees.

The Joplin Uplift was a Black-owned newspaper started in 1926 by Augustus and Fannie Tutt. The small, family-owned newspaper grew to serve thousands of subscribers.

Its name reflected the racial uplift movement centered around the idea of empowering Black Americans through education, communication and involvement. Nanda Nunnelly, President of the Minnie Hackney Community Service Center reflects on its impact to the community.

The program also looks at the 40-year career of KSNF Vice President and General Manager John Hoffmann who helped launch the Golden Lion Scholarship at MSSU and supports community service by his workers. Television station staff share their impressions of Hoffmann who also reacts to receiving the award.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of December 31 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, January 6 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
