Romance scams have cost people in the United States and Canada a billion dollars over a three-year period. The Better Business Bureau breaks down the anatomy of a romance scam on the next Newsmakers.
Pamela Hernandez with the Missouri Better Business Bureau explains how con artist engage lonely individuals on dating sites starting with the contact and then grooming them to believe their new love is in the military, a government official or someone overseas who needs help with a financial matter. Hernandez also shares fake florist and jewelry scams which increase around Valentine’s Day. She provides information about a scam survival kit available to help victims rebuild their financial profiles.
