(From the Newton County Sheriff's Office)Corporal Hope Birkinsha responded to a medical emergency in the jail. An inmate lost consciousness and was not breathing so Corporal Birkinsha administered Narcan.
The inmate regained consciousness, began breathing and communicating with corrections officers. The inmate then lost consciousness and stopped breathing.
Corporal Birkinsha administered Narcan again, forcing the inmate to regain consciousness and begin breathing. Corrections officers continued medical assistance to keep the inmate conscious until EMS arrived and transported the inmate to the hospital.
While at the hospital, the hospital staff managed to revive them by administering overdose medication.
It is evident the inmate would have suffered a fatal overdose incident had it not been for the actions of the correction officers involved, particularly Corporal Birkinsha’s direct contribution.
