(From the City of Joplin)On behalf of the City of Joplin, TREKK Design Group, LLC will begin testing the sanitary sewers in the College Skyline area starting Monday, August 4. This includes a process called “smoke testing,” and residents are encouraged to learn about the process.
The testing process is anticipated to take approximately four days to complete within this basin. The contractor will begin at the northwest corner of the area and proceed southward. Door hangers providing information about the smoke testing were distributed in this area during the week of July 28. Local Police and Fire officials will also be notified so they are prepared if citizens who are unaware of the testing process and report smoke in this area.
Smoke testing helps find and locate defects or improper connections by blowing an odorless and non-toxic smoke into the sewer. When there are no defects or improper connections, smoke will only be seen from the roof vents of each building that is connected to the sewer. When there are direct improper connections, smoke will be seen where there are defects.
Smoke testing is a common method used to identify issues in the sanitary sewer system, such as cracks, leaks, or illegal connections. During the test, non-toxic, odorless smoke is blown into the sewer pipes. If smoke escapes from the ground, buildings, or storm drains, it may indicate a system defect that requires repair.
If smoke testing is scheduled in your neighborhood:
You may see smoke coming from roof vents, utility holes, or even cracks in the ground.
The smoke is harmless and does not pose a health risk.
To help prepare, make sure your drains have water in the traps by running faucets for a few seconds.
If smoke enters your home, it could indicate a plumbing issue, such as a dry trap or faulty connection, which should be inspected by a plumber.
