Gift trees are again available to people who had tornado damage from the 2011 tornado.

To apply for trees, citizens should go online to Joplin’s website at www.joplinmo.org and click on “How do I….” tab on the left, and scroll down to the “Get trees” option to complete the information sheet. Residents may also go to the Joplin Park Office at 3010 W. 1st Street or Duquesne City Hall during office hours to complete the application.
This effort is a partnership between the Missouri Department of Conservation, the Cities of Joplin and Duquesne, Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, the U.S. Forest Service and everyone who has donated trees or funding, as well as the many people who have helped plant a tree toward replacing the 15,000 to 20,000 trees lost in the May 2011 tornado. As of Christmas 2013, more than 12,000 trees have been donated and planted by volunteers.
Ric Mayer, Community Forestry Recovery Coordinator, said, “As long as there are trees being donated and volunteers stepping forward to plant them, the recovering community forest will continue to grow.”
Simple facts to keep in mind are:
• You may apply if you had tornado damage.
• Do not apply if you have already received gift trees.
• You can get up to 3 gift trees for anywhere in your yard or your side of the sidewalk.
• Not-for-profits, such as churches and schools may also apply. Different guidelines apply.
• The trees are not for commercial properties.
• Shade and shorter utility-friendly trees are available.
• Once you apply, you are on the list.
• We will give out as many trees as have been donated; first come first served!
• We will contact you prior to delivery, so you can call 1-800-DIG-RITE in a timely fashion.
• They will be shade(tall) trees, or utility-friendly (short)trees, or any combination, but be careful to give shade trees plenty of room to grow tall and strong.
• Trees will be about 4 foot to 6 foot tall at planting time.
• We are limited by our volunteers. If we do not have enough volunteers, you, your friends and family will need to plant your trees yourselves. We will leave you “How –To” information.
• You will get your trees faster if you can plant them yourself.
• Delivery is available. Or schedule to pick your trees up at the holding nursery.
• It is good to wait until your house is built before planting trees to avoid damaging new trees.
• All trees have been donated. They are given to folks with the help of Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, the cities of Joplin and Duquesne, and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
• You are welcome to join us in the planting, and we hope you will let us get water from your outside spigot to water the trees at your house. Even more, we hope you will water them once or twice a week, thoroughly!
