The annual Zumbathon is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 14, in the Beimdiek Recreation Center at Missouri Southern State University.
Zumba instructors will lead participants during the workout, and there will be door prizes and raffle items. The cost is $15 at the door.
Proceeds will help fund the Charlotte Ollinger Hopper Scholarship as well as the GYN Cancers Alliance.
Charlotte Hopper, an adjunct English professor, was diagnosed with Stage III-C ovarian cancer in March 2012. After surgery and chemotherapy proved successful in her fight against cancer, her family decided to create a scholarship to help ease the burden of students facing a similar situation.
“It’s a small patron scholarship for a cancer survivor or a dependent going to Missouri Southern,” said Randy Hopper, Charlotte’s husband and academic services coordinator with the Upward Bound program. “We’re working toward getting it endowed.”
The scholarship is available to full- or part-time students who possess a minimum 2.5 GPA and are a cancer patient, survivor or the dependent of a patient or survivor within the last five years.
Last year, the event had nearly 125 participants and raised $2,500, said Hopper.
