10th Street closure planned Wednesday, Thursday in Webb City

ROAD CLOSURE: Hillhouse (contractor for the new O’Reilly) will have 10th Street closed starting tomorrow, Wednesday, June 1 and Thursday, June 2. It will be closed from Madison to the alleyway toward Jefferson. They will be installing a storm drain.

Also, the block on Madison in front of the new O’Reilly will be closed; one lane; on Wednesday and Thursday, starting at 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM (due to MODOT regulations)

Help needed in search for missing Joplin woman

(From the Joplin Police Department)

The Joplin Police Department is currently in need of the public’s assistance in locating Willanna Anita Dunn who is reported as missing. 

Dunn is 61 years old and is approximately 5’2” and 120 pounds. She has past medical issues and her family is concerned about her well-being. 

Her vehicle is accounted for and her method of travel is unknown at this time. She was last heard from on 5-28-2016 at about 4pm. It is unknown what she was last wearing before her disappearance. She resides in the area of 11th and Jackson.

Her driver’s license photo is attached and anyone who has any information is urged to contact the Joplin Police Department at 417-623-3131.

Crowder student mural to be unveiled at Lee Library

The Lee Library at Crowder College will be unveiling a student painted mural on Wednesday, June 1, 10:30am. The Lee Library is located inside the Arnold Farber Building on the Neosho campus.

The mural titled “Plan, Lean, Care, Create, Serve,” was a student project lead by art instructor, Allen Bishop. Bishop previously oversaw the creation and painting of murals permanently displayed inside the Elsie Plaster Community Center and 1st floor of Newton Hall. Bishop will be on hand at the ceremony to discuss the process behind the project.

Nancy Hughes devotion: Barb

Key Scripture:

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” I Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV)


Devotion:

When someone needs to be admitted to a hospital because of a serious illness, there usually isn’t a lot of smiling or laughing. That is, unless it happens to be one where my friend Barb is a patient. Barb doesn’t look forward to going to the hospital, but she still has to go. Why? Barb is in a fight with a monster named cancer.

You would never know it, though, just by talking with her. Her smile is so beautiful and bright that you are tempted to put on sunglasses, just to protect yourself from the glow. And her laugh! It’s a mixture of waves hugging a beach while children are giggling and 50’s music is playing on the radio . . . you just can’t get enough.

But what stands out above everything else is this: Barb’s focus is not on Barb. Her focus is on those around her and their personal battles. You see, Barb is an encourager. She spreads love and hope like a refreshing spring rain on a thirsty field of corn.

Now before you picture her bouncing and giggling as she goes from room to room, let me be clear: Barb has days when just getting out of a chair makes her tired and she has no choice but to rest as she heals. And yet it is apparent that in the middle of those days, she has a peace and calm that can only come from one source – Jesus.

Somehow I think that Paul must have had a friend just like Barb when he wrote today’s Key Scripture in I Thessalonians. Please understand. Barb has those days when she wonders if it is worth it all, these treatments and the side effects. But she knows something that many of us need to remind ourselves: God has a plan and a purpose for everything we face every single day. She will tell you that God did not cause her cancer but He allowed it. And as her friend, I can tell you that she has encouraged more people than I can ever count to hold on to the righteous right hand of a Father who will not ever let go of His children.

Let me ask you something: Where are you on the encouragement meter? Do you make a point, even in the middle of whatever is going on in your life, to build others up with a smile and a prayer and a hug? Or is your focus so centered on what you are facing that you cannot see others hurting around you?

Please understand this: there is no ignoring the battle going on. Barb simply understands that the One fighting for her wants her to encourage others to stand firm as He fights for them, too.
And may I share the response to her encouragement? The other patients look forward to her message of kindness and compassion and life. Her encouragement gives them hope. Yep. Paul must surely have had a friend named Barb.

My Prayer for Today:

Liberal man charged with DWI following injury accident

A Liberal man was charged with driving while intoxicated following a one-vehicle accident 7:20 p.m. Monday Belle Center Road, five miles north of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2001 Kia driven by Dylan T Freeze, 22, Liberal, traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck three mailboxes and a road sign, then overturned, ejecting Freeze.

Freeze, who was treated for serious injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, was also charged with lane violation, no insurance, and no seat belt.

Highway Patrol DWI Arrests May 29-30

The Missouri Highway Patrol arrested the following people for driving while intoxicated:

Man shot in the chest at 5th St. and Park Ave., Joplin man arrested

Sunday, May 29, at 4:37 AM, Joplin Police responded to 5th St. And Park Ave. in reference to a male who had been shot in the chest.

The victim was identified as Justin L. Thurston, 32, Joplin. Thurston was transported to the Freeman Hospital by ambulance.

Investigators determined that a blue PT Cruiser was involved in the shooting and left the area at a high rate of speed.

Officers located the suspect vehicle at 219 S. Highland Ave. Apt. A

James A. Grunden, 20, Joplin, was located at that residence. Grunden was arrested for 1st Degree Assault.

At this time, Thurston does not have any life threatening injuries.

Eight-year-old drowns in Flat Creek near Cassville

An eight-year-old Cassville boy drowned 1 p.m. Saturday in Flat Creek, three miles north of Cassville.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Haiden C. Harrison, 8, was swimming when he disappeared under the water. He was recovered and taken to Mercy Hospital, Cassville, where he was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. by Dr. Cox.

The water fatality was the third this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Oklahoma woman injured in accident west of Anderson

An Oklahoma woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 10:15 a.m. Saturday on MO 76, four miles west of Anderson.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Jeep Liberty driven by Mattie R. Sherman, 69, Grove, Oklahoma, traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, and overturned, going through a fence.

Sherman was treated for minor injuries at Integris Hospital, Grove.

Neosho teen injured in one-vehicle accident

A Neosho teen was injured in a one-vehicle accident 1:47 p.m. Saturday on North Fork Road, three miles west of Goodman.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Dillon Adams, 18, Neosho, traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned.

Adams was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

City of Joplin offices closed Monday, trash pickup days moved

In recognition of the Memorial Day holiday, the City of Joplin offices will be closed on Monday, May 30. This closing includes the Joplin Recycling Center, MAPS and the Sunshine Lamp Trolley services. All City services will resume their regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, May 31.

Public Safety services and Airport Operations will continue to operate throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend, as these departments run 24/7 throughout the year.

Please note that residential trash service will not be picked up on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. Customers who usually have trash picked up on Mondays will have their trash picked up on Tuesday, May 31. For the remainder of the week, the residential trash collection will move to the next day with Friday’s customers having a Saturday pick-up.

Curbside recycling, which starts June 1, will be picking up Tuesday’s route on their initial day due to this schedule change. And similar to the residential trash service, for the remainder of the week, the recycling collection will move to the next day with Friday’s customers having a Saturday pick-up

Survey shows Joplin residents' priorities for city budgeting

In a survey conducted earlier this year, citizens were asked to address what truly matters to them as they think about their city of residence? This survey, part of the Priority Based Budgeting (PBB) process recently adopted by the City of Joplin, is the citizen engagement portion of PBB which helps ensure that resources are allocated in the best way to meet the needs of citizens.

The survey asked citizens how they would rank seven priorities, and provided an opportunity to participate in the City’s budgeting process. The input received will influence how the City invests in and achieves each result. The priorities listed in the survey were determined through an analysis of City planning documents and in consultation with City Council and City staff.

Of the seven categories listed in the survey, citizens prioritized these with their votes as shown in the listing below:

"By looking at many factors of the City’s operations, Priority Based Budgeting starts to identify services areas that are important to our community,” said City Manager Sam Anselm. “As we go through this process, we’re looking at all programs and services and the significance they hold with our citizens. With these priorities defined, City Council can better allocate our resources to make sure we’re spending money on the programs that the community feels are most important. This will help better manage the broad number of services we provide, while recognizing our budget constraints.”

Budget work sessions are scheduled in September, and the Council will be addressing these priorities at that time. “Between now and then, City staff still has more work to do in identifying costs of programs and services through the PBB process, in order to do a thorough evaluation of City services,” added Anselm.

Newsmakers program features Joplin Museum Chatauqua plans

The upcoming edition of the Newsmakers interview program features information about the Joplin Museum Complex and plans for a Chautauqua in Joplin. The programs will feature actors portraying President Theodore Roosevelt and President Harry S Truman. During a Chautauqua performance, the actors dress and portray the characteristics of the person they are portraying while they share stories. These programs will take place on June 10 and June 11. People may call the Museum for more information at 417-623-1180.

Guests on the program are Paula Callihan and Amy Koeshall, members of the Joplin Museum Historic Board. The interview also provides information about the Joplin Museum Complex and other events planned in Joplin for early summer.

After the Storm: T-shirts and tornado recovery exhibit to open at Joplin Museum

In recognition of the incredible volunteer spirit that occurred following the 2011 tornado, the Joplin Museum invites the public to view our exhibit After the Storm: T-shirts & Tornado Recovery. This exhibit focuses on the overwhelming number of volunteers that assisted Joplin during its recovery after the storm. For creating such a positive impact in our community, these people left little intangible items behind. This exhibit is our thank you to all those that participated in the recovery efforts.

Following the tornado, out of town volunteers visited the museum to learn more about the community they were working in. Museum staff noticed that many of them were wearing t-shirts representing their hometown or the organization they were volunteering with. From this, the idea for a future exhibit was spawned to tell this powerful story. Museum staff asked them if they would be willing to donate their t-shirts, sign them and share their thoughts. Most of the t-shirts are signed and contain moving and heartfelt statements.

“We sincerely thank all of those benevolent volunteers who travel great distances, toiled in the hot sun, and then literally gave us the shirt off their backs,” said Chris Wiseman, museum curator and exhibit designer.

The exhibit opened May 25 and will close on Friday, June 17. Museum hours are Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Wednesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is located in Schifferdecker Park, 7th and Schifferdecker.

MSSU student to receive broadcast association scholarship

Alex Bryant, a junior mass communications major from Joplin, will be among students from around the state who will receive scholarships from the Missouri Broadcasters Association and the MBA Foundation.

The $1,250 MBA Foundation Scholarship will be presented during the organization’s annual convention, set for June 10-11 in Branson. Bryant was nominated for the scholarship by Missouri Southern’s KGCS-TV, where he has been involved in many productions and activities. He joins a list of successful scholarship recipients from the station, said Judy Stiles, general manager of KGCS.

“We’re proud that the Missouri Broadcasters Association has recognized our students by awarding scholarships,” said Stiles. “It shows the quality level of our students here at Missouri Southern.”

KGCS-TV operates as a service of the Department of Communication. Students gain valuable hands-on experience in broadcasting by working at the station. Programming may be seen over the air on digital channel 22 and on regional cable television systems.

Ribbon cutting scheduled as Joplin curbside recycling begins

The City of Joplin invites all residents to join in a Ribbon Cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1 to recognize the start of residential curbside recycling in Joplin. The event will be held at the home of Christina Williams and Samuel Wimsett, 2602 South Kingsdale Avenue.

The family currently recycles and take their items to the Joplin Recycling Center on a regular basis. They were one of the first households to sign up for curbside recycling. Williams also serves on the Solid Waste Advisory Commission.

City officials will join the Williams family, along with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and representatives from Republic Services, Inc., the contractor providing this service.

“We are thrilled to have this service coming to Joplin,” said Christina Williams. “We know of so many other cities offering this convenience to their residents and are pleased that Joplin has joined this group.”

“Big Al”, the mascot for Joplin Recycling Center will also be attending this event, and refreshments will be available.

Curbside recycling will begin on June 1 for all residents who have signed up for this service. It is available to all Joplin residents living in single-family or duplex homes at a fee of $4.75 per month in addition to the regular trash rate of $11.73, for a total of $16.48.

Each resident who chooses to participate will receive a 96-gallon container with a light blue lid for their recyclables. Containers will be picked up one time per week on your regular trash day. Please remember that even though services are on the same day, a different truck at a different time will pick up recyclables.

Joplin woman injured in two-vehicle accident near Duquesne

A Joplin woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident 4:15 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 66 at Kenser Road, one mile east of Duquesne.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2000 Toyota Echo driven by Janice M. Weaver, 61, Joplin, was stopped at a light. A 1991 Toyota Camry driven by Correnna M. Gray, 42, Joplin, failed to yield and struck the rear of the Weaver vehicle.

Weaver was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Neosho woman, children injured after crashing into tree

Three Neosho residents were injured in a one-vehicle accident 11:25 p.m. Wednesday on MO 59, one mile north of Goodman.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1990 GMC 2500 van driven by Ashley D. Mills, 31, Neosho, ran off the roadway and struck a tree.

Mills and a passenger, Hailey J. Mills, 8, were treated for minor injuries and another passenger, Coltton A. Mills, 9, was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Carthage woman injured in one-vehicle accident near Lamar

A Carthage woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident 10:47 a.m. Tuesday on I-49, two miles south of Lamar.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Kelly K. Kellenberger, 45, Carthage, lost control on a wet roadway, left the roadway, and overturned.

Kellenberger was treated for moderate injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Driver hits pedestrian in Wal-Mart parking lot crosswalk

A Bella Vista, Arkansas man was struck by a vehicle while waking through the crosswalk 2:08 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Jane Wal-Mart.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Frances D. Hare, 51, Goodman, struck James Dean, 81, Bella Vista.

Dean was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy Hospital, Bella Vista.

Crowder College newspaper wins top honors in state contest

Crowder College’s student newspaper, the Crowder Sentry, recently won a top honor in a contest co-sponsored by the Missouri Press Association and the Missouri Collegiate Media Association. The award was the Sweepstakes Award, which signifies the most points accumulated from awards, in the community college newspaper division in Missouri. The newspaper won a total of 29 awards at the state level, which is a record for the newspaper.


The Sentry also won a "First Place" rating in a national contest sponsored by the American Scholastic Press Association based in College Point, New York.

Diamond teen injured in one-vehicle accident

A Diamond teen was injured in a one-vehicle accident 8 p.m. Monday on Carver Road, two miles southwest of Diamond.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2006 Dodge Durango driven by Clayton D. Burke, 17, Diamond, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the left side of the roadway, and struck a fence.

Burke was treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Two killed in head-on collision near Asbury

Two Bella Vista, Arkansas, residents were killed in a head-on collision 12:35 p.m. today on MO 171, a mile north of Asbury.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Dorothy J. Kropp-Henke, 89, Bella Vista, was southbound on 171 when it crossed the center line and struck a northbound 2000 Kenworth Conventional Tractor-Trailer unit driven by Joseph S. Kyle, 70, Baxter Springs, Kansas, head on.

After the impact, debris from the Kropp-Henke vehicle struck a 2007 Toyota Tacoma driven by Andrew D. Guest, 21, Joplin.

Kropp-Henke and a passenger in her vehicle, Winston J. Henke, 94, Bella Vista, were pronounced dead at the scene at 1:06 p.m. by Jasper County Coroner Rob Chappel.

The fatalities were the 46th and 47th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Nancy Hughes devotion: The time out lesson

Key Scripture:

“But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.” Jonah 1:17 (NIV)


Devotion:

My kids hated time out when they were little and got into trouble. To be honest, I think it was as much for me as it was for them. Love my kids? Passionately with every ounce in my body. Protect them if someone tried to hurt them? Like a seven foot tall gorilla with a stun gun.

But when they could not handle a situation themselves without falling apart or attacking each other, a time out seemed like the perfect answer. They could sit down and I could calm down.
I remember a few of the many reasons for assigning a time out through the years: when my son attempted to sweep up his sister in the vacuum. And when my daughters tried to darken their bedroom by putting a blanket over a light bulb and caused a fire.

Almost every time they received a time out, it served as a punishment for not obeying our rules at home. But I also reminded them that this was a perfect opportunity to think about what they had done and what they could do differently the next time. There was always a lesson to learn in each time out.
Today’s Key Scripture in Jonah 1:17 talks about someone else who was in time out but he wasn’t sitting on a kitchen chair thinking about his choice. He was in the belly of a whale. And it wasn’t a mom who had put him there but God.

His name was Jonah. And he had been given a specific directive by God. “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” (verse 2) But Jonah did not want to obey. Perhaps he knew about their idol worship and cruelty to prisoners of war and didn’t want to go near the people who lived there. Or maybe he just didn’t trust God to take care of him.

No matter the reason, Jonah didn’t obey and God quickly gave him a time out to think about his poor choice – by allowing him to be swallowed by a whale.

Now, can I just say here that one gulp and I think I would have been a believer and confessed my disobedience to God? I’m sure I would have. And Jonah, from the whale guts, probably prayed immediately to God and repented, thanking Him for saving his life and vowing to do exactly what God had asked him to do in the first place, by preaching to the people of Nineveh.

However God, in His infinite wisdom, allowed Jonah to sit a bit longer in time out to learn an important lesson: when God says “go,” you go. Jonah needed to be obedient to God’s directing.
He also needed to understand that in His mercy and forgiveness, the Lord had provided for him and answered his prayer to save his life.

In verse 10 we read that God commanded the whale to spit Jonah out on dry land so that he could immediately do what he should have done in the first place: preach the message of God’s destruction to the people of Nineveh if they did not repent.

Have you ever experienced a time out from God? Perhaps you didn’t find yourself on a kitchen chair and hopefully not in the belly of a whale!

Maybe the Lord prompted you to write a note or visit an elderly neighbor or buy groceries for the person in line ahead of you but you ignored that nudge.

I encourage you to listen to the Lord speaking to your heart and to obey. He is faithful to His children. But if needed, He will use a time out.


My Prayer for Today:

Father, I want to listen and obey but sometimes I’m like Jonah. Thank you for your mercy and forgiveness and patience. And for giving me another opportunity to do exactly as you direct. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.


Reflection:

Have you ever felt the Lord nudging you to do something but you chose to ignore the Spirit and make a totally different choice? Did you find yourself in a period of time out after that?


Application:

Write on a note card “Is this from you, God?” and put it in your purse. When you feel a nudge to help someone, glance at the card and ask God that simple question. Follow His guidance.
