Burglary in process in McCune turns out to be false alarm

(From the Crawford County Sheriff's Office)

Incident in McCune KS

On the evening of Sunday October 8, 2017 at 7:08 pm, Crawford County Deputies were dispatched to 906 Walnut in McCune for a possible burglary in progress.

The caller was the tenant at that address whose in-home security camera alerted his phone to movement inside the house. The caller and his family were away from home at the time.

The caller stated that it looked like two people were in the house and that one of them possibly had a weapon- possibly a long gun or a crowbar but the picture quality was poor and it couldn't be determined.

Deputies began surveillance on the house and alerted neighbors of the situation. Deputies then flooded the house with light and announced their presence requesting that any occupant come out of the house. There was no response from within the house. The caller continued to alert deputies to some movement within the dark master bedroom.

After a period of time with no reply from within, deputies attempted to make entry to the house. A key was obtained from the caller and deputies entered the structure. A complete search of the residence was conducted and the house was found to have no intruders and all windows and doors were secure.

Units cleared the house at 9:54 p.m.

It is believed that the low lighting conditions in the bedroom and the poor quality of the video stream led the caller to believe there was an intruder. The motion detection within the home remains unexplained, as it continued to alert during the operation. It is not unusual to get false alerts from these devices.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the neighbors and community members for their patience during this lengthy operation.
