City of Joplin schedules public meeting on East Town Historic Resources Survey

As part of a historic preservation effort, the City of Joplin is working with Keenoy Preservation from St. Louis to learn more about East Town in Joplin relating to this area’s historical buildings, sites, and events. In upcoming weeks the East Town Historic Resources Survey Phase II will be conducted. Citizens are invited to learn more about the survey during an Informational Meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday August 4 at Joplin City Hall in the Council Chambers located on the fifth floor. City Hall is located at 602 S. Main Street.

During the meeting, Ruth Keenoy with Keenoy Preservation will give a brief presentation about the East Town Historic Resources Survey Phase II. Residents can join in the discussions about this project, its purpose and the process that will be followed during the survey. City staff will also be there to address any questions about the survey and research project.

This is the second of a two-phase intensive level historic survey. The purpose of the survey is to identify and research within the survey boundaries historic resources and potential properties potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places either individually or as a district. 

Through this process, the history of the neighborhood will be documented and preserved as well as providing information for further community development and historic preservation projects.

The results of the survey will be discussed as well as recommendation on future preservation efforts will be presented.

Citizens are encouraged to bring photos and stories they would like to share about the neighborhood to the meeting. The surveyors will not take the photos, but would like to discuss them with those sharing them to make notes of significant findings of East Town’s history as depicted in the pictures.
