(From KGCS)Going back to school means students are exposed to other people’s germs and are at risk for contracting an infectious disease. On Newsmakers, medical officials urge parents to have children vaccinated and be up to date on booster shots.
Mercy pediatrician Dr. Umar Muhammad discusses vaccines recommended for children, concerns parents express and myths about vaccines that he dispels. Joplin Health Department Nurse Manager Misty Hammer explains the importance of booster shots for those in middle school and high school.
Hammer and Julie Stamps of the Willcoxon Health Center on the MSSU campus both discuss the four strain Meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine required at some colleges. And, in a video segment, we follow a student taking advantage of extra protection with a Meningococcal B vaccine.
The show is airing nightly at 5 and 9 p.m. the week of August 6 on KGCS-TV and will be broadcast at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, August 12, on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.
KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
