Upcoming Nanette Philibert Business of Art Symposium topic of next Newsmakers

(From KGCS)

We’ve all heard the term ‘starving artists’ but it doesn’t have to hold true for those majoring in art related fields as they prepare for future careers. Missouri Southern State University students and artists in the region can learn how to market themselves and their creations, and learn how to run their own art business at the 10th Annual Nanette Philibert Business of Art Symposium happening November 1st. The history of the event and details of this year’s keynote speakers are the focus of this week’s Newsmakers program.

Dr. Nii Abrahams, Professor of Economics and Frank Pishkur, Professor of Art and Design explain how and why the symposium was started by former Management Professor Nanette Philibert. Katie Fields and Kelsey Little with the Small Business Development Center on campus and Dr. Dan Cravens, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship talk about the benefits of the sessions and keynote speakers. Student artists discuss the benefits of a portfolio review offered separately at the symposium and share the impact of hearing first hand from working artists.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 and 9 p.m. the week of October 15 on KGCS-TV and will be broadcast at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, October 21, on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
