(From KGCS)Callery or Bradford pear trees are pretty but unwanted. The City of Joplin is removing and replacing the pear trees which are considered an invasive species that puts other native trees at risk.
The tree replacement is just one beautification project underway in Joplin that will be discussed on the upcoming Newsmakers.
Assistant City Manager Tony Robyn and Joplin Parks and Recreation Director Paul Bloomberg explain the flaws in the Callery pear trees that include bad odor and fragile limbs. They also share other beautification project plans. A video segment details the tree replacement process currently underway.
Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of April 7 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.
KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
