Man listed in critical, but stable condition following near-drowning in Elk River

(From the McDonald County Sheriff's Office)

On August 14, 2024, at approximately 5:00pm, McDonald County Deputies, Noel Fire Department and the Noel Marshals Office was dispatched to the Elk River behind Shadow Lake nightclub for a reported drowning. An off duty Anderson officer was in the area and also responded.

McDonald County Deputies and fire personnel arrived on the scene within 3 minutes of the dispatch. Upon arriving, the off-duty officer was performing CPR on a minor male and advised that when he arrived, CPR had been provided by bystanders.

Noel fire personnel / McDonald County Deputy Eric Bennett took over chest compressions while Deputy Travis Sheppard applied an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Upon the AED analyzing, it gave a “Shock Advised” announcement.

A shock was delivered and the AED advised “No Shock Advised”. It was determined that the victim had regained a pulse but was not breathing effectively. Fire and law enforcement personnel continued to provide rescue breathing for the victim.

Upon the arrival of Freeman Ambulance personnel, the victim’s care was transferred to them. The victim was then flown to a Springfield hospital. As of 1:00pm today, August 15, 2024, he is listed as “Critical but, stable."

The McDonald County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the bystanders, off duty Anderson Sgt. Josh Phillips and the Noel Fire department for their rapid response.

This is a prime example of early CPR, early AED use, and all hands working together for a positive outcome.
