(From Missouri Southern State University)Missouri Southern State University Departments of Communication and Music are proud to welcome the Missouri National Guard 135th Army Band for a free concert to honor the service of our military personnel and their families. The free event is Saturday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Taylor Performing Arts Center on the MSSU campus.
The 135th Army Band is under the Command of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Keith Moyer and First Sergeant Charles Bart. The Citizen-Soldiers of the 135th Army Band represent a diverse group of individuals who proudly serve our great Nation and State.
The 40-piece band includes citizen soldiers who are also college students, engineers, teachers, music performers, pilots, business professionals, and neighbors.
The concert is hosted by the Missouri Southern State University Department of Communication and Department of Music and sponsored by Dawson Heritage Foundation with additional support from Pinocchio School of Dance and Joplin Elks Lodge #501.
The band performs a combination of patriotic music, Armed Forces theme songs, Dixieland jazz, traditional jazz and even some pop music. The concert is open to all and veterans and their families are recognized at the event.
Dr. Shellie Hewitt, MSSU Associate Vice President of Admissions and Enrollment and a former US Air Force Staff Sergeant E-5, will make opening remarks and welcome the band.
The concert will be recorded by KGCS-TV, the campus television station, for playback in its entirety as well as edited segments featuring the Music Performance Teams (MPTs).
KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Optimum Internet in Carthage. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
