Joplin Museum holding gingerbread house contest

Calling all contractors, and not just your everyday contractor, but those who build houses of gingerbread! The Joplin History and Mineral Museum will host a Gingerbread House Contest for kids and adults this holiday. Gingerbread houses will be displayed during the History and Mineral Museum’s Holiday Open House, on Saturday, December 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Gingerbread house entries can be dropped off between 10 a.m. December 3 and 5 p.m. December 12. See the museum’s website for rules at www.joplin-museum.org








The contest has three categories with different age groups. These include:

-Miniature-size houses from kits with age categories: 3 to 6 years old; or 7 to 10 years old.
 
-Regular-size houses from kits with age categories: 3 to 6 years old, 7 to 10 years old, 11 to 15 years old, or 16+ years old.

-Original houses not made from a kit with age categories of 7 to 10 years old, 11 to 15 years old.

All entrants receive a Family Membership to the Joplin Historical Society, a certificate and a thank-you bag of goodies. First-place winners receive monetary prizes, and second and third-place winners receive non-monetary prizes. Winners will be announced, and prizes will be given at 11 a.m. on December 14 at the Christmas Open House. Judges’ decisions are final.






 

Come see the entries during the History and Mineral Museum’s Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 14. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., guests will enjoy free admission, holiday shopping, hourly door prizes, bingo scavenger hunt for kids, and can view the Christmas displays. Mrs. Claus will also be there for pictures with children and families.

The museum is in Schifferdecker Park at 504 S. Schifferdecker Avenue. Their hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. They can be reached by calling 417-623-1180.
