Route 66 Centennial planning topic of Newsmakers program

(From KGCS)

“Get your kicks on Route 66,” says the popular song by the Nat King Cole Trio. Every year thousands travel what is known as the Mother Road.

In 2026, the nation will celebrate the centennial of Route 66, established as a United States highway on November 11, 1926. It runs through eight states including Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. Efforts, already underway, to honor the legendary highway are the focus of this week’s Newsmakers program.

Patrick Tuttle with the Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau talks about a visit from Michael Wallis, who wrote a book about Route 66 which influenced the Disney movie Cars. Wallis will be in Joplin on April 4th for the unveiling of another mural in downtown Joplin and for a speaking appearance at 7:00 p.m. in Corley Auditorium on the Missouri Southern State University campus.

Dales Oglesby with the National Route 66 Centennial Committee and Renee Charles of Cars on the Route in Galena discuss that community’s themed attractions and dedication to preserving its section of Route 66. A video package details a new drive-thru mural in the shape of a highway badge with the artist who has already seen international travelers making stops there. And Aaron Perry shares his plans for the Petrol Motor Quart, a gas station themed motor court featuring mid-century designed cabins with plenty of neon signs.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of March 23 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS – Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS-TV programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
