Extreme fire danger for Joplin Metro area Friday, Saturday

(From the Joplin Fire Department)

The Joplin Fire Department reminds all area citizens that the National Weather Service has placed the Joplin Metro area in an extreme fire danger for Friday and Saturday due to very high winds combined with dry conditions. The extreme fire danger indicates that fire spread will reach historic speeds and could endanger lives and property very quickly.

“We are asking everyone to please refrain from burning today through Saturday, and if you see smoke, report it immediately so that it can be investigated or extinguished,” said Deputy Fire Chief Andy Nimmo.

Jasper and Newton Counties and surrounding counties are under a Red Flag Warning. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
