Drivers in Joplin will soon experience new timing for traffic signals along 7th Street (Route 66) between Rangeline Road and Route 249, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
The Adaptive Timing System is scheduled to be activated by the end of this week (June 2) or the beginning of the week of June 9. The system uses a combination of cameras and computers to gauge traffic and adjust signal timing to allow for optimal traffic flow through the intersection.
Drivers may notice longer wait times at some traffic signals. They may also experience signals skipping a particular direction if cross traffic is heavier. The goal of the adaptive timing system is to improve overall traffic flow during heavy traffic periods.
Over the next few weeks, MoDOT traffic engineers and contractors will be monitoring the system and making adjustments to the signal timing as needed.
The new timing system is part of a project to improve intersections and modify traffic signals along 7th Street (Route 66) between Rangeline Road and Route 249.
