JHS graduate Laela Zaidi named Young Democrat of the Year

Zaidi was awarded Missouri’s Young Democrat of the Year at the Jefferson Jackson Dinner in St. Louis on Saturday, June 7th. Doug Brooks, Chairman of the 32nd Democratic Senatorial District made the nomination.
 
Laela was the President and is a Co-Founder of Joplin High School’s Young Democrats. She worked on the following political campaigns in Missouri:

  • In 2012, she interned for the Missouri Democratic Coordinated Campaign which reelected U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill.
  • In 2013, Zaidi worked as a paid intern for Charles Dake for the 157th.
  • In April of 2014, Laela was the Co-Campaign Manager for Friends to Elect Dr. Debbie Fort.
 
Laela is an extremely accomplished Southwest Missouri Young Democrat. She graduated in May 2014 with honors and in the top 2% of her graduating class and was very active at Joplin High School as well as in her community.

  • Ninth in the nation for Congressional Debate
  • Member of National Honor Society
  • Active member of Key Club
  • Two year captain of the tennis team
  • Member of Future Business Leaders of America
  • Volunteer at Mercy Hospital
 
Ms. Zaidi has been frequently asked to write blogs for the Hufffington Post/Teenage Blogger. Her essays resulted with her appearing on a TV show “The War Room” with the former Governor of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm.
 
Doug Brooks noted that the work done by Laela Zaidi and other Young Democrats in SWMO  "is taking place in one of the most Republican areas of the state.”
