Carthage man killed, three injured in crash on 59

A Carthage man was killed and three people injured in a two-vehicle accident 1:52 p.m. Tuesday on MO 59 at Burr Oak Road.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Maynard Barnabas, 30, Carthage, pulled into the path of a 1998 Chevrolet 1500 driven by Wyatt M. Briscoe, 18, Sarcoxie. After the impact, the Barnabas vehicle overturned, partially ejecting Barnabas.

Barnabas was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:55 p.m. by Jasper County Coroner Shawn Woodward.

A passenger in the Barnabas vehicle, Babiano Ioanis, 26, Carthage, was treated for minor injuries at Mercy Hospital, Joplin.

Briscoe and a passenger in his vehicle, Brandon D. Rickman, 15, Sarcoxie, refused treatment at the scene for moderate and minor injuries, respectively.

The fatality was the 35th for Highway Patrol Troop D in 2017.
