Joplin PD officer of the month's sharp eye led to felony arrest, meth confiscation

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On July 2, 2017, Officer Brenden Richardson was on patrol near Walmart Neighborhood Market at 1600 E. 7th Street. Officer Richardson observed a vehicle with no front license plate and saw it was stopped at a stop sign at 8th and Massachusetts. He observed that the vehicle sat still at the stop sign for an extended period of time, then began to back up from the stop sign while the driver stared at Officer Richardson. The vehicle then proceeded to enter the lot of Neighborhood Market and park.

Officer Richardson located the vehicle in the lot and ran the tag. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Conway, Arkansas. Officer Richardson called for other units, who responded to the scene and officers detained the driver, Bradley Cloe, and three other occupants. Through the investigation on scene, it was determined these other occupants had no knowledge of the vehicle being stolen. Cloe was arrested for vehicle tampering in the first degree and transported to the city jail, where a baggy of methamphetamine was located on Cloe's person.
Officer Richardson had been working as a solo beat officer for just over a month at the time of this incident. Nonetheless, Officer Richardson was able to recognize the driver's behavior as abnormal and suspicious. Due to his keen observation while on patrol, a stolen vehicle was recovered and returned to its owner, and dangerous drugs were taken off the street.
Thank you, Officer Richardson, for your outstanding police work and for working hard for the citizens of our community. I greatly appreciate your hard work and dedication.
Respectfully,

Matthew Stewart
Chief of Police
