Joplin man arrested for assault, endangering the welfare of a child after shooting

(From the Joplin Police Department)

On September 21, 2017 at 5:06 p.m. officers were dispatched to a call at 132 South St. Louis. The caller said there was a disturbance in the residence and a male had fired a gun. An officer and a trainee were right by the location when the call came out, and arrived immediately. They began gathering information from people outside and learned the suspect was still in the house along with a female and two small children.

Additional officers arrived and the house was surrounded. They immediately began trying to communicate with the suspect.

Twenty-four minutes after the call came out, at 5:30pm, the female and two small children exited the house to safety and were not injured. After 20 more minutes of attempted negotiations, the male exited the house at 5:50pm and followed commands and was taken into custody.

Detectives began their investigation at the scene. A 4-year-old boy and 11-month-old girl were in the residence at the time of the shooting. They were both taken into protective custody due to the incident and poor living conditions at the residence. It was learned the suspect fired a handgun at his 24-year-old brother during a physical confrontation. Police arrested Christopher L. Carter, 23, Joplin, for 1st Degree Domestic Assault, Armed Criminal Action and endangering the welfare of a child. Those charges have been submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office. He was also arrested for 21 active Joplin City Warrants.

We are grateful no injuries occurred in this incident and that our officers were able to bring it to a peaceful resolution.
