A Missouri Southern State University student has passed away due to injuries sustained in an off-campus automobile accident last Friday evening.

Elly Liebenguth, an 18-year-old freshman from Garden City, Mo., passed away Wednesday morning at an area hospital.

Liebenguth and another MSSU student were traveling eastbound on Newman Road around 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, when their moped was struck by another vehicle.

Liebenguth was an Honors student at MSSU.

“She was a bright, exuberant and capable student. We already miss her terribly,” said Honors Program Assistant Director Rachel Stanley.

Darren Fullerton, vice president for Student Affairs, said the university has been providing counseling and outreach to students this week, and that the Honors program is offering additional support to her classmates.

“We’ve been following Elly’s medical status since the evening of the accident, and have stayed in close contact with her family,” said MSSU President Alan Marble. “It is heartbreaking to lose a student. We’re keeping her family and friends in our prayers and will continue to provide support to our students and faculty.”
