A Riverton man is behind bars following a residential burglary northeast of Columbus over the weekend.
Just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, deputies were dispatched to a home, where neighbors, who were checking on the house while the residents were gone, discovered a man inside, allegedly attempting to steal property, including a handgun.
After being confronted, the suspect busted out a window and fled from the home.
Approximately an hour later, just after 2:30 a.m., Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies located the suspect, 23 year-old Tyler Garner, at his Riverton home.
Garner was arrested and transported to the Cherokee County Jail where he is being held in lieu of $10,000.00 bond on allegations of Burglary, Theft and Criminal Damage to Property.
“This is a great example of how crimes can be deterred or interrupted when neighbors watch out for one another,” stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.
“Fortunately, nobody was injured during the commission of this crime, which involved the suspect having a handgun.”
“This investigation remains ongoing, and while we anticipate additional arrests to be made, I’m appreciative of the quick actions by the deputies to locate and apprehend Garner before anyone got hurt,” concluded Sheriff Groves.
