(From the Joplin History and Mineral Museum)
Joplin History and Mineral Museum is hosting a Chautauqua on October 13 and 14 for citizens to learn more about Thomas Hart Benton, the artist behind the famous mural “Joplin at the Turn of the Century” that is displayed in Joplin's City Hall.
During a Chautauqua performance, the actors dress and portray the characteristics of the person they are representing while they share stories about the featured person.
This event offers several options for citizens to enjoy. On Friday, October 13, “Cocktails with Benton” will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and includes an opportunity to view rarely seen sketches from Thomas Hart Benton.
On Saturday, October 14, enthusiasts can take a Mural and Historical Building Tour. It is offered from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The event closes with “An Evening with Benton” being held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
