KGCS now broadcasting in high definition

KGCS-TV on the campus of Missouri Southern State University is now broadcasting a high-definition signal for Joplin-area television viewers.

“The change provides a higher quality, clearer picture like people are used to seeing,” said Judy Stiles, KGCS general manager.

The update continues a series of changes to Missouri Southern’s television station. Last year, the station moved to channel 21 for broadcasting. 

The station was one of the first to broadcast a digital signal in the Joplin television market in 2008. 

Television at Missouri Southern started as a cable service in 1984, and transitioned to a broadcast station in 1988.

“The ability to not only produce in HD, but to broadcast in HD enhances our student experiences,” added Stiles.

Students from the Department of Communication help produce local programming. They include news interview programs such Newsmakers, student-produced entertainment shows, coverage of international theme semester presentations on campus, coverage of MSSU sports and coverage of Joplin City Council meetings.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21, and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communication at Missouri Southern State University.
