Doctors and nurses come to mind first when we think of working in healthcare, but the world of medicine has a multitude of career options. MASH Camp is designed to give high school students a chance to experience what it is like to work in a medical setting through hands-on immersive lessons and shadowing healthcare workers. This week on Newsmakers, we hear from Heather Booth who is the Health Careers Coordinator for the Southwest Missouri Area Health Education Center (AHEC). She’s also coordinator of MASH Camp, which has a more than 20-year history. She explains how students can register.
Angela Kennedy, Mercy Hospital Joplin and Ashley Jones-Scroggins, Freeman Health System explain activities for students that include dissection and tours. Dr. Sherry Whiteman, MSSU Chair of Allied Health discusses immersive learning opportunities that include a visit to the cadaver lab and simulation lab experiences. A MASH Camp participant, Bailey Peeples, explains how taking part in the camp gave her insight to her future path in medicine.
The show is airing nightly at 5 and 9 p.m. the week of July 16 on KGCS-TV and will be broadcast at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, July 22, on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel – KGCS Missouri Southern.
