66, Barco Drive-Ins to be featured on Newsmakers program

Drive-in theaters hit their heyday in the 1950’s, and while many struggle to survive, several in southwest Missouri are still a draw for those who enjoy movie-watching under the stars. This week on Newsmakers, a look at this American tradition.

Nathan McDonald, owner/operator of 66 Drive-In in Carthage and Scott Kelley, operator of the Barco Drive-In in Lamar discuss the challenges of running the outdoor theaters from managing older properties to film selections. Guest contributor David Green goes to the drive-in to hear what movie fans have to say about the experience that many call a family tradition.








The show is airing nightly at 5 and 9 p.m. the week of July 30 on KGCS-TV and will be broadcast at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, August 5, on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel – KGCS Missouri Southern.

KCGS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
