Teenager cited for DWI after head-on collision kills Joplin man

A Weir, Kansas teenager has been cited for driving while intoxicated following a two-vehicle crash  6:32 a.m. Saturday on Route P, two miles west of Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2011 Ford Taurus driven by Ralph A. Barger, 82, Joplin, crossed the center line and struck a 2007 Toyota Solara driven by Amber L. Swager, 19, Weir, Kansas, head-on.

Deputy Jasper County Coroner Jason Hutchins pronounced Barger dead at the scene at 6:40 a.m.

Swager was treated for serious injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

The fatality was the 19th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

  2. The Highway Patrol posts the names of drivers who are arrested for driving while intoxicated. Her name was on the list.
