Jasper County Sheriff's Department warns of spring scams

(From the Jasper County Sheriff's Department)

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone of the scams that start in the springtime.

Asphalt driveway scams are big in our area and they’re about to begin. If you’re approached to have your driveway asphalted or sealed, before you agree to anything, and certainly before you give them ANY money, be sure and check out the company.

Discourage allowing people you don’t know into your home. Many times these scammers will ask to come in to use the restroom, and while unattended, they will steal items, checks or cash. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask for names, phone numbers, and references. Get a vehicle description and the tag number of the vehicle. You can’t be too safe. It’s your money; don’t let someone take it without doing a decent job; or maybe not doing the job at all.

“Know MO” enables consumers to look up complaints the Attorney General’s Office has received about individuals and businesses. They have a database of more than 100,000 consumer complaints dating back to 2012. The website is: www.consumer.ago.mo.gov/Know_MO/

Educated consumers are one of the best weapons against fraud.
