MSSU activities for week of April 10

Two film festivals at Missouri Southern State University will offer three French selections in the coming week.

The 2016-17 International Film Festival will conclude with a screening of “La Bete Humaine (The Human Beast)” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in Plaster Hall’s Cornell Auditorium.

The 1938 French film, directed by Jean Renoir, is about a train engineer whose alcoholic family has left him with a compulsion to kill. The beginning of the film, showing the train’s trip from Paris to Le Havre, is considered to be some of the greatest documentary montage ever created. The screening is free and open to the public.

The Tournées Film Festival will continue with two offerings at the Route 66 Movie Theatre, 24 S. Main St., in Webb City.

“L’armée des ombres (Army of Shadows)” will be screened at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11. The film is about the fictional French Resistance leader Phillipe Gerbier as he escapes from the Gestapo and sets about rebuilding his network. The characters are based on real Resistance figures.

“La cour de Babel (School of Babel)” will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13. The documentary follows a year in a Paris school room for children who have recently immigrated to France. The film creates complex portraits of the children and captures the diversity of their experiences.

All three screenings are free and open to the public.

Other events scheduled include a performance by the Southern Symphony Orchestra, an interactive trivia competition for students and a trumpet recital featuring two junior music majors.
