MSSU activities for week of April 17

The MSSU Earth Day Sustainability Conference 2017 will be held Tuesday, April 18, in Billingsly Student Center’s Connor Ballroom.

A variety of speakers offering educational topics and environmental issues will be offered.
·         8:30 a.m. – The Greening Effect of Tribal Remediation at the Tar Creek Superfund Site
·         9 a.m. – Joplin Recycling Center
·         9:30 a.m. – CMC Metals Recycling
·         10 a.m. – Missouri American Water
·         10:30 a.m. – How Empire District Electric is Embracing Environmental Stewardship
·         11 a.m. – Building Environmentally Sustainable Business Practices (Leggett & Platt)
·         11:50 a.m. – The American Solar Challenge in National Parks.
A variety of Earth Day-related booths will be set up in the ballroom, offering environmental and health and safety information. A poster/art/product contest featuring work by area middle- and high-school students will also be on display. Nearly $2,500 in refurbished electronics will be awarded as prizes, thanks to a grant by the Region M Solid Waste Management District. Prizes will also be awarded by Leggett & Platt.
The event is sponsored by the Environmental Health & Safety Club at Missouri Southern. The conference is free and open to the public.

More than 2,500 area high-school students and teachers will gather on the Missouri Southern campus for Sophomore Day on Wednesday, April 19.
Students will arrive beginning at 8:30 a.m., with the opening ceremony starting at 9:15 a.m. in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Students will be broken down into groups to tour the campus and learn more about the wide variety of programs offered. Members of the faculty and staff will offer brief presentations at each stop. The closing ceremony will begin at 1:35 p.m. in the athletic center.
Participating school districts include Joplin, Webb City, Carl Junction, Carthage, Aurora, Neosho, Jasper, Monett, Diamond and Logan Rogersville.

Other activities planned on campus include a performance by comedian Francisco Ramos, screenings of the movie “Split” and the annual Southern Symphonic Chorus performance.
Tuesday, April 18
Grocery Bingo: 12:20 p.m., Lions Den. Students can play for a chance to win groceries from the Campus Activities Board.
Francisco Ramos: 7 p.m. Corley Auditorium. The comedian featured on Season 9 of “Last Comic Standing” will perform. Free to the campus community.
Wednesday, April 19
Senior Trumpet Recital: 7:30 p.m., Corley Auditorium. Senior Tyler Jones will perform.
Thursday, April 20
Earth Day Photo Booth: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. CAB will offer students a chance to have their photo taken with a themed background.
“Split”: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre. Admission to the screening is free for the campus community.
Friday, April 21
“Split”: 6:30 p.m., Phelps Theatre.
Sunday, April 23
Southern Symphonic Chorus: 3 p.m., Central Christian Center, 410 S. Virginia Ave. The Southern Symphony Orchestra will team with Missouri Southern’s Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers for a performance of Mozart’s “Requiem.” Free and open to the public.
