Marijuana smoking man at 7th Street Wal-Mart resists arrest, tased

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Incident spotlight

Something was in the air last night (besides drizzle) that caused people to resist arrest.

At 7:24 p.m. yesterday evening one of our officers was driving through West 7th Street Wal-Mart. He saw a vehicle in the far corner of the parking lot, with smoke coming out of the windows. When he contacted the 56-year old driver, it was apparent that he was smoking marijuana and had marijuana in the vehicle.

The driver was hostile towards the officer and not cooperative. The officer tried to detain him, and he turned and threw a punch at the officer and elbowed him. The officer was able to fight the offender onto the hood of his car and they rolled onto the pavement as he tried to handcuff him. After another citizen ran towards them, not knowing if he was friend or foe, the officer stepped back to assess the threat. The main suspect then fled towards the woods and was tased to stop him in his tracks. He was arrested for marijuana, resisting and assault on law enforcement.

At 11:51 p.m. last night one of our officers recognized a Dodge pickup that had ran from him the night before and got away. He called other units into the area and attempted a stop at 4th and Schifferdecker. The truck fled northbound at speeds of 70 MPH passing cars on the wrong side of the road. The officer saw the truck go off-road between mobile homes on Zora. The truck was found abandoned and no arrest was made at this time.

At 1:10 a.m. this morning an officer tried to stop a vehicle at 24th and Annie Baxter for plates that checked to another vehicle. The vehicle fled eastbound on 24th and was not pursued for the license plate violation. The vehicle ultimately crashed at 24th and Wall and the occupants fled. Officers checking the area located a male at 22nd and Main. He ran on foot from officers and hid. A police K9 was used to apprehend the 26-year-old male hiding in a bush in the 2100 block of Joplin. A gun, meth and paraphernalia were located in the vehicle.
