JPD officers don't buy axe-wielding man's claim he was stopping a rape, arrest him on multiple charges

(From the Joplin Police Department)

Incident Spotlight

Yesterday evening at 4:38pm we received a call to the gas station at 2707 East 32nd about a male threatening people in a vehicle with an ax.

While officers were on the way, the male with the ax called us and reported he was trying to intervene after he saw two males in the back of a van raping a female.

Once it was all sorted out, it was determined that the original caller was in the van the ax carrying man was describing, but there was no sexual assault that had occurred.

The man asked the driver of the van for money. Once the driver gave him two dollars, the suspect displayed a hatchet, tapped it against the window, and demanded that the driver give him a ride to Denny’s.

The victims wished to pursue charges in this case and the ax-wielder was arrested for Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Assault 4th, and Armed Criminal Action.
