Classical Conversations Homeschool Community enrolling students

(From Classical Conversations Homeschool Community)

Classical Conversations helps parents answer the question, “Am I able to homeschool my children?”

Their mission and purpose are to establish and support communities across the United States as well as empower parents in the classical, Christian model of teaching. This model combines the classical “tools of learning”, a Biblical World View, and community to enable parents everywhere to successfully teach their children in the home setting.

There are currently three Classical Conversation communities in the Joplin area with students from age 4-12 years of age. Junior High and High School classes take place only at the Fellowship community and are enrolling students for the upcoming 2020/21 year for only a short time longer.

Beginning at age four, parents join their students in learning memory work, science experiments, art/music appreciation, presentations and games to review past week’s material. Then in 4-6th grade writing, math drills, and grammar are added to the day.

Taking what has been modeled for them, they continue learning through repetition and practice the other four days of the week. Jr. High and High school age students, still guided by their parents, complete work laid out in a study-guide through six interrelated strands of learning.

Once a week no more than twelve students come together to present and discuss Logic, Grammar, Research, Reasoning, Exposition, and Debate. These seminar days are led by parents trained in the Classical Model and determined to keep learning themselves.

“Although directors facilitate the weekly community time and lead class discussions, parents continue to be students’ primary teachers at home. The director/parent/student partnership is a valuable relationship that fosters accountability for all, but the parents structure the learning around family time activities and schedules allowing for freedom to prioritize what is best for their family,” said Nichole Bull, both a director and a parent of two current students and two 2020 graduates.

She continues, “Walking alongside parents as the whole family grows to Know God and Make Him Known strengthens me in my own homeschooling experience.” Classical Conversations was founded in 1997. It has continued to spread through the years and is now even national. From statistics taken of 2019 graduates, 92 percent planned to attend college. Ninety-five percent of their parents reported their teens' Christian faith was strong.
