City of Joplin schedules public meetings on update of stormwater management plan

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin is currently in the process of updating its stormwater management master plan. The stormwater management master plan primarily evaluates the performance capability and deficiencies of the City’s existing major drainage system.

Some of the key goals in updating the master plan are to identify infrastructure deficiencies, drainage and flooding concerns, and erosion or water quality issues within the City. With these known issues, a recommended capital improvements plan will be developed for the City to correct existing major deficiencies and will include a list of potential stormwater projects to be addressed in the future.

To help recognize stormwater issues within the community, City staff will hold a series of Public Meetings asking citizens for their input regarding drainage issues within the City, including their neighborhoods.

Three public meetings are scheduled focusing on different areas of the City, including the northeast, northwest, and southern areas of Joplin. The public in these areas are encouraged to take this opportunity to discuss drainage issues that may be affecting them. Map exhibits will available at the meetings so attendees can provide City staff with a visual location of their drainage issue. Citizens are welcome to share items such as pictures or videos that illustrate the drainage issue in question at the meeting. Citizens may also complete a questionnaire to describe the nature of the drainage issue experienced. This information will assist in the research phase of the study to ultimately develop a thorough stormwater master plan.

The Public Meeting focused on stormwater issues in northwest Joplin will be held at the Joplin Athletic Complex, 3301 West 1st Street, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17.

The Public Meeting focused on stormwater issues in northeast Joplin will be held at the Housing Authority’s Community Center located at 5th and Turk Avenue, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 24.

The Public Meeting focused on stormwater issues in southern Joplin will be scheduled in the later part of September or early October. The City will post these details as they are finalized. Please watch for future announcements.
