Senior Town Hall to be featured on Newsmakers program

In Missouri, there are 1.1 million citizens over the age of 60. The Department of Health and Senior Services reports that older adults will outnumber minors for the first time by the year 2030. The issues that can create for state services is the focus of Newsmakers this week.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson issued an executive order to create a Missouri Master Plan on Aging by December 31, 2025. Local members of the MO Silver Haired Legislature, Sandy Hughes and Barb Ittner explain how state officials will come to Joplin to gather input from seniors, family caregivers, service providers and others at a town hall meeting March 8.








Hughes and Ittner detail items of concern for seniors including transportation, housing, isolation and medical needs, and legislative action supported by the Silver Haired Legislature. They encourage seniors and caregivers to share areas of needs and supports that work well at the town hall which will be held at the Joplin Senior Center from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of February 25 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, March 2 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.
