Carthage Police Department reveals results of alcohol compliance checks

The Carthage Police Department, in cooperation with The Alliance of SWMO, recently conducted alcohol compliance checks at businesses throughout the city. 17 businesses within the city were checked with 14 being in compliance and three failing. 

The Alliance of Southwest Missouri provided funding, training, and teaching resources for the project. We want to say thank you to them and let everyone know that we plan to continue this project throughout the year.

Joplin Health Department schedules mosquito fogging

Mosquito fogging is scheduled for Wednesday, 7-3-24. 

The Joplin Health Department fogs for mosquitos early in the morning during the mosquito season, weather permitting.

Lamar man injured in collision on 160

A Lamar man was injured in a two-vehicle accident 5:35 p.m. today on U. S. 160 in Lamar.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2016 Honda CRV driven by Angela K. Merando, 53, Liberal, struck the rear of a 2018 Ram truck driven by Christopher D. Jankowski, 44, Lamar.

Jankowski was treated for minor injuries at Cox Barton County Hospital, Lamar.
 


Crowder students place in national FBLA competition

Crowder College student Grant Preddy (Cassville) is the National Champion in Finance, a title he won at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Orlando, FL just last week. In addition, Crowder College student Jenna Ehrhardt (Neosho) took 8th place in Accounting.

Grant, Jenna, Shawn Boberg (Joplin) and Raven Vogelpohl (Fairview) represented Crowder College as they competed in their areas of business expertise, while also attending various business workshops and taking advantage of networking opportunities with businesses from across United States.







These students competed against major Universities from across the country, as nearly every state sends their top competitors to represent their Universities and Colleges. In the Finance competition won by Preddy, 2nd place went to a student from Penn State University, a school with a population of over 85,000 students.

The students who competed last week are already excited for next year’s National Conference and already have big goals.






“What is exciting is that these kids are already looking to next year! Jenna is already planning to win the National Championship in Accounting. Grant is wanting to do some type of performance event. and, Raven is excited about Marketing,” said Scott Donaldson, Crowder College Business Instructor and FBLA Sponsor.

FBLA is the world’s largest business career and technical student organization with a mission of preparing over 230,000 members for business careers.

High school sports magazine created by MSSU alumnus expanding into SW Missouri

High school sports are at the heart of many rural communities, and a Missouri Southern State University Communication Department alumnus has created a magazine designed to highlight all aspects the young sporting world. Mike Cooper and VYPE Magazines are the focus of the next Newsmakers program.

Cooper started his career in Joplin television production after being part of the first class to launch MSTV, the precursor of KGCS-TV. At a time when publications like magazines face struggles, Cooper is finding success with VYPE Magazines which feature profile stories of athletes, coaches and community supporters and are supported by local advertisers within the featured high school’s community. Cooper is expanding from Kansas into Southwest Missouri. He is joined by Walfre Hernandez of State Farm Insurance in discussing the benefits of advertising in the magazine.








Newsmakers is airing nightly at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. the week of July 7 on KGCS-TV and will air at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13 on KOAM-TV. It is also posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.

KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Optimum Internet in Carthage. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.

Joplin man injured in collision on I-44

A Joplin man was injured in a two-vehicle collision 8:42 p.m. Monday on I-44 in Joplin.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2015 Dodge Journey driven by Brandon L. Davies, 43, Joplin, struck a 2024 Kenworth two truck driven by Matthew R. Orahood, 29, Carl Junction, from behind.

Davies was treated for minor injuries at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Galena man arrested for aggravated battery, assault, criminal threat

On June 30 at approximately 5:30pm, The Galena Police Department was notified of a physical altercation in the area of 11th and Keller Street. 

As officers arrived on scene one of the individuals took off on foot. As officers were chasing this individual, he attempted to enter three residences then ended up taking a bicycle from a female as she rode past him. He eventually ditched the bicycle south of Baker Street and ran into the wooded area, crossed a fence line into thick brush. 







When officers caught up to the individual, he continued to physically resist. As the officers placed hand restraints on him, he spit, attempted to smear blood and other body fluids on the arresting officers making threats to all responding personnel.
 
The officers restrained the individual and identified him as Raymond L. Williams DOB: 08/17/1978. He was carried out of the wooded area and transported to the Hospital for medical evaluation. Once cleared by the hospital, he was transported to the Cherokee County Jail.

Charges are being requested through the Cherokee County Attorney’s Office for Aggravated Battery, Interference with LEO, Assault, and Criminal Threat. This is an ongoing investigation, and more charges may be requested.

Joplin men arrested for theft of telecommunications wire

On June 30, 2024, during an investigation with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Jordan Romero, 35, of Joplin and Mark Cravener, 50, of Joplin, were arrested at 4326 W, Deer Meadow Lane, Joplin, for the theft of telecommunications wire belonging to AT&T. 

Both individuals were apprehended while burning the insulation off the stolen wire in a burn pit at the above residence. 









Jordan Romero and Mark Cravener have been taken into custody on charges of receiving and possessing stolen property. This arrest marks Romero's second related offense this year, having previously been arrested by Jasper County Deputies at a residence at 1105 Monroe, Joplin, following an investigation on March 27, 2024, for the theft of approximately 1,000 feet of telecommunications wire. 

A warrant for stealing was issued for him at that time with $10,000 cash only bond condition. However, on April 10, 2024 his bond was lowered to $2,000 cash and he posted that bond and was released. 

At the time that Romero was alleged to have committed the theft in March, he was out on bond for a charges of violating his probation and robbery.

Guest speakers announced for Carver Day celebration

George Washington Carver National Monument is pleased to announce that Alex Primm and Edith Powell will the special guest speakers for the 81st Carver Day celebration. Carver Day is Saturday, July 13, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Carver Day celebrates the life of George Washington Carver and the establishment of the national monument in his honor. This year commemorates the 81st anniversary of George W. Carver’s passing and the subsequent establishment of the national park on July 14, 1943, the first to honor an African American. Mr. Primm with speak at 11:00 a.m. and Ms. Powell at 1:00 p.m. The event is free of charge.








Alex Primm has been an oral historian for over 40 years in the Ozarks. He also served as a correspondent in Vietnam, director of the Ozark Agriculture Museum, awarding-winning producer of regional videos, oral history teacher in mainland China, and is a speaker with the Missouri Humanities Council Speakers Bureau Program. Primm is the author of Ozarks Voices: Oral Histories from the Heartland. He will share a presentation entitled Missouri’s Natural Heroes, which includes George Washington Carver.

Dr. Edith Powell is a retired professor of immunology and hematology at Tuskegee University. A native of Tuskegee, Alabama she has a lifelong interest in the history of the town and university. She is also an independent research consultant on George Washington Carver for the Tuskegee University Archives. Powell will share a presentation on her recent book entitled, More Than Peanuts, The Unlikely Partnership of Tom Huston and George Washington Carver. Following her presentation, Dr. Powell will host a brief book signing in the visitor center lobby.

Other activities are scheduled throughout the day including exhibitors, musical performances, guided tours, educational programs, peanut milk demonstrations, activities for kids, Junior Ranger station, and much more. The Diamond Lions Club will provide food concessions.








Carver Day celebrates the African American experience through speakers, storytelling, music, and educational programs. In keeping with Carver’s legacy of accessible and affordable education, Carver Day, like all our programs, is free of charge. Carver Day is presented in partnership with the Carver Birthplace Association.

Administered by the National Park Service, George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver - scientist, educator, and humanitarian.
