Missouri Southern to offer master's degree in education-English language learner

(From Southern News Service)

A new Master of Science in Education – English Language Learner (ELL) program will begin next summer at Missouri Southern State University.

The degree is the latest graduate degree offering from Missouri Southern which has a steadily-increasing lineup of master’s degrees.

The new degree is designed for educators who would like to pursue ELL certification, according to Dr. Deborah Brown, Dean of the School of Education at MSSU. She says it will help teachers meet the needs of students whose first language is not English.

“We are developing this program because of the increasing ELL population in K-12 schools in southwest Missouri,” Brown says.

The degree program will offer courses in linguistics, second-language acquisition, diverse cultures, pedagogical implementation, assessment, and professionalism in the ELL field.

Brown says teachers working to meet the needs of English language learners in their classrooms will benefit, as will their students.

The program will help area schools by providing a larger pool of highly qualified teachers to assist students who are learning English.

Courses in the ELL program will be offered online starting in the summer of 2017 to accommodate teachers’ schedules and provide the flexibility necessary to progress through the program at a reasonable pace.
