East Newton Board considering four-day week for 2017-2018

As part of the continued efforts in keeping the patrons informed, the East Newton R-VI Schools administration will provide monthly information concerning Board meetings.

A recap of the November, 2016 regular meetings is as follows:

Patriot Pride recipients were the Jordan Lewis and Hayden Larson.

Public Comments: None

The Board approved the Consent Agenda, including the previous month Board minutes and monthly bills, substitute teacher list, and Policy updates 2016C distribution.

Program evaluations for the month of November included Career Education and Early Childhood Special Education.

Under reports a financial report was given for the month of October and enrollment numbers were presented. Total enrollment on the last day of October (K-12) was 1,335 students. Attendance overall for September was 95.5%.

Under Old Business, approval of pouring and vending contract to Coke, 2nd Readings of MSBA policy revisions 2016A and 2016 B, and discussion of procedure JED-AP1.

In respect to New Business, the Board approved a high school senior student from East Newton to be our candidate for the John T. Belcher scholarship.

The Board set the dates for filing for Board of Education. The dates to sign up begins on December 13 and ends on January 17 at 5:00 PM. Filing can be done anytime Central office is open during business hours.

The Board named Bill Kirby Homeless liaison for the school district and Darren Cook at Migrant/ELL coordinator. The Board approved a Summer School Contract for the 2017 summer school with Newton, it is a one year contract.

The Board approved the 2nd budget amendment to the current school budget. Discussions were held by the Board regarding class size and student enrichment.

Finally, discussion was held concerning the school calendar for 2017-2018. The Board is considering a four day school week and will be collecting feedback and research on the topic. The 2017-2018 school calendar will be approved at the February 14 Board meeting.
The Board then went into Executive Session.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for December 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Central Office.
