First Carthage 2020 and Beyond meeting set for Tuesday

(From Carthage R-9 School District)

It is hard to believe our first Carthage 2020 and Beyond meeting is less than one week away! We are excited to hold these meetings with the purpose of engaging the community in discussions regarding long-term goals and plans for the district. Please recognize all meetings will start at 6:30 p.m. instead of 7 pm. (Note: The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, at Carthage High School.) We hope the schedule change will allow parents with younger children to attend.

After introductions, the administrative team will present information regarding the original Carthage 2020 concept, goals, and outcomes, and discuss the Carthage 2020 and Beyond objectives.

We will divide into table groups to answer two basic questions: 1) What skills or characteristics do you believe a Carthage High School graduate should possess, and 2) What topics or additional information do you think Carthage 2020 and Beyond should consider or address in order to make appropriate recommendations to the Board of Education?

The small group activity will last approximately 30 minutes. Table leaders will present their groups’ thoughts to the entire audience. I will conclude the meeting by explaining future meeting schedules and agendas.

The intent of the community meetings is to receive input from children, staff, and community members regarding future district goals. It is critical to hear thoughts from the stakeholders regarding plans for the next five to ten years. However, please remember the recommendations made will be determined based on what is best for children. Although the consequences affecting adults should be considered, the discussions must focus on children.

Please remember we cannot discuss individual students or staff. You need to talk to the appropriate administrator concerning those issues. It is not the responsibility of the Carthage 2020 and Beyond participants to choose specific programs, instructional techniques, or staff placement. A perfect example of the committee’s purpose occurred during Carthage 2020 regarding the intention to have all students become bilingual, specifically creating an elementary “magnet” school. Many parents and staff members researched various opportunities to increase the likelihood to meet the goal. Ultimately, the dual language program was selected. The Carthage 2020 committee recommended the vision and others developed the program.

Although the Board of Education and the four chairpersons understand the process and objectives of Carthage 2020 and Beyond, I will post official information via social media, our district website, and various media outlets. Please contact the central office if you have questions.

Dr. Mark Baker

Carthage R-9 Superintendent
