The National Weather Service in Springfield has issued an Excessive Heat Watch, which is in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Saturday evening. * TEMPERATURE...Highs in the middle 90s with heat index values around 103 to 108 are expected Wednesday through Friday. * IMPACTS...A prolonged period of hot weather can increase the risk of heat related illness, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The very young, the elderly, and those without access to air conditioning will be especially vulnerable.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... An Excessive Heat Watch means that a prolonged period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a DANGEROUS SITUATION in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
