MSSU dental hygiene clinic to provide free sealant for children in Jasper School District

(From Southern News Service)

The Dental Hygiene Clinic on the campus of Missouri Southern State University will be the site for a Free Dental Sealant Day for children in the Jasper School District on Friday, Jan. 24.

The event, sponsored by the MSSU Dental Hygiene Department and Premier Auto Group of Carthage, will begin at 9 a.m., and will feature dental hygiene students providing sealants for third and sixth graders – while nursing students will be there to give the kids educational information.

“It’s always important for us to give back to the community,” said Rebecca Harshaw, dental hygiene clinical instructor.

“Our students not only get hands-on experience, but they’re also promoting oral health, which is vital considering cavities are the number one preventable disease in children.”

Close to 70 children will receive the free service - which is also being made possible courtesy of the Missouri Southern Foundation and Patterson Dental.

The clinic is located on the first floor of the Julio S. León Health Sciences Building.
