Spring Art Challenge planned for Neosho

(From Neosho Arts Council)

With the Neosho Arts Council's spring concert series postponed, their gallery space temporary closed, and everyone staying home to stay safe the group wanted to not just share creativity but challenge it.

They are currently holding a Spring Art Challenge, an online arts contest for a variety of disciplines, that will take place over seven weeks to offer the community some creative diversion.

"We wanted to encourage the continuation of the arts while also maintaining a safe environment," Sarah Serio, president of Neosho Arts Council, said.

The challenges include: sidewalk chalk art, photography, comic book covers, authors and playwrights, dance choreography, costume/cosplay design and construction, and culinary arts. There are three age divisions, all entries are free, and cash prizes will be award to the top winner in each division of each category.

The council hopes participants will look at the supplies they have on hand to create with and problem solve to overcome challenges that they would normally run to a store to fix.

"We wanted to give a variety of challenges that would interest people but also ones they were likely to have the supplies to complete," Serio added. "Each challenge is designed to be completed in or around your home."

Each category is currently open for entry but the first deadline is May 1 for sidewalk chalk art. After that the deadlines come weekly.

Besides offering up the Spring Art Challenge Neosho Arts Council is producing artist spotlights. This video series can be found on the groups facebook page.

"These artist spotlights give us a chance to talk to an area artist and help share their work, get a peak at what they are currently creating, and find out where we can purchase work online," Serio said.

The group which held their second annual ArtCon, a pop culture convention, fundraiser back in February will be doing a special spotlight series on the artists, authors, and creators of pop culture both large and small.

"Right now comic book shops are closed, comics are not being distributed nationally, and these artists, authors, and creators are all loosing work and trying to refocus," said Serio. This will be an interview series covering how the artists got started in their field, their current or on hold projects, and how to support them right now. "These creators who've attended ArtCon are local or regional creators so it's only logical to spotlight them as well because they are the backbone of our annual fundraiser."

A selection of other arts related events will also be moving to a more virtual platform the group expects. "Since we can't hold workshops right now or gather we are planning some online events," Serio said.
