(From the Barton County Sheriff's Office)On 2/20/22 at approximately 0036 hrs Lamar Police Department initiated a pursuit on a vehicle within the city limits of Lamar. The suspect in the vehicle being pursued was believed to be in possession of multiple firearms and a report was made that the suspect had been brandishing the weapons while driving around Lamar.
When Officer’s with the Lamar Police Department initiated a stop on the vehicle, the vehicle fled from officers reaching high speeds within the city limits. The chase continued into the county and eventually back into town.
After pursuing the vehicle on several side streets, the vehicle then left town traveling east at a high rate of speed reaching speeds of 100mph. Deputies were informed of the pursuit when it was initiated and were in route from the west side of the county. Off duty Deputies were also called in to assist in the pursuit.
Lamar Police pursued the vehicle east on 160 Highway until the vehicle turned off at T Highway. The vehicle continued on T Highway traveling southbound.
By this time one Deputy had caught up to the chase. As the pursuit neared U Highway Barton County Deputies took over the pursuit. The suspect turned east on to U Highway reaching speeds of 80mph and driving in the wrong lane of traffic. At the intersection of U Highway and SE 70th Ln the vehicle failed to negotiate the curve in the road and left the north side of the roadway. The vehicle then became disabled in the ditch.
As Deputies and Officers approached the vehicle, the suspect was attempting to take off, but the vehicle sank further into the mud. Numerous commands were given to the suspect to shut the vehicle off and to show his hands. The suspect continued to ignore all commands given. Deputies then used a less lethal bean bag and deployed it through the passenger side window. The suspect then quit trying to move vehicle.
Again, Deputies and Officers gave commands to exit the vehicle and the suspect refused. A Deputy deployed his K9 and went to the driver's side and removed the suspect from the vehicle.
As the suspect came out of the vehicle, he grabbed the Deputy’s gun in attempt to disarm him. The Deputy’s K9 then engaged the suspect. The suspect continued to fight on the ground and attempted a second time to disarm the Deputy.
After a brief struggle with the assistance of Lamar K9 Officer, Deputies and Officers were able to get the suspect in to custody. The suspect was treated for minor injuries sustained from the dog bite and struggle.
At this time the identity of the suspect is not being released due to the suspect being a minor. The Barton County Sheriff’s Office has sent charges to the Juvenile Office for the following charges:
