Rain hampers first Third Thursday of the year in Joplin

(From Downtown Joplin Alliance)

"The best laid plans..."

We all know how that statement ends! On March 16, we kicked off our 16th season of Third Thursday. We had plans to make it one of the best opening months to date-- performances, demonstrations, sooo many vendors.

But alas! Mother Nature had the final word and the drizzly afternoon turned into an evening of cold, rain, and wind. Third Thursday is a "rain-or-shine" event, so Downtown Joplin Alliance staff were still out on the streets through it all. It wasn't just us, however. Belief in what we do runs strong, so we had help throughout it all.

We want to thank our volunteers, Gingy & Dusty, who manned the entry points despite the downpour, and Jordan from Hip Hip Array, who not only managed to get a lovely balloon selfie station set up, but also helped chase down errant tents when the wind kicked up. What a lady!

We also are always grateful for the help of the Public Works Dept from the city--they help provide power to the entire event, even when the weather is less than ideal.

We had some vendors (and many of our food trucks) brave the weather and try to make a go of it--we couldn't do it without them and are so thankful for their flexibility.

A final thank you to the community members who still came out--those who grabbed dinner from a food truck, went to watch the live music at Chaos Brewing Company, or visited with one of the vendors who outlasted the storm. Downtown is all about the people. And you showed up for us.

The next Third Thursday is on April 20, with the theme of "Be a Hero!". Join our sponsor, Children's Center of Southwest Missouri, and our great vendors and come enjoy what will surely be an amazing evening in Downtown Joplin!
