Drop-off boxes for retired American flags placed in two Joplin locations

(From the City of Joplin)

Citizens unsure of how to dispose of their tattered or worn-down American flag now have an easy option: they can place it in a Retired Flag Drop Off Box. The boxes are colorfully painted with stars and stripes and “Retired Flag Drop Box” is lettered to mark its purpose. This is a project created and sponsored by Robert S. Thurman American Legion, Post 13.

The Legion has placed two boxes in Joplin, with one centrally located just east of Memorial Hall at 8th and Joplin Street. The second box can be found in the northern boundary of the city, at the General Aviation Terminal, 5497 Dennis Weaver Drive. Currently this box is located just inside the facility, although plans are to place it outside of the building to allow access to it 24/7.

Members of Post 13 will pick up these flags on a regular basis and store them so they can be properly disposed of during their Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Flag Day, June 14. Watch for more details of this ceremony as the date draws near.

In less than a week’s time of its availability, Bob Harrington, Commander of Post 13, reported that he picked up 49 flags from the box located near Memorial Hall. “We are proud to provide this service to our community and appreciate everyone supporting this so the American Flag can be retired properly.”
